Going back to Five Days in July

In honor of July 5th, which has to sit in the shadow of its much more celebrated neighbor July 4th, I bring you a classic album from Canadian roots-rockers Blue RodeoFive Days In July.

Released in 1993, the album contains several classics in the group’s extensive repertoire, including “Five Days In May” (why they didn’t call the album that, I don’t know) and “Hasn’t Hit Me Yet.” The latter is typical of Blue Rodeo, with ringing guitars, shimmering harmonies and a sad, sad lyric that almost sneaks by you via the sunny melody. The former is an epic emotional travelogue set to music. If you’re not familiar with Blue Rodeo do yourself a favor and start with these two songs and this album, then work both forward and back from there.
