CD of the Week: The Spring Standards

No One Will Know EP
No One Will Know EP

It may be the last simmering days before summer vacation is over, but my preferred listening at the moment is a northeastern band, The Spring Standards, which just issued a new EP, No One Will Know. This is summery acoustic pop with a classic feel, like Simon & Garfunkel or Crosby, Stills, and Nash filtered through indie acts such as Ida or the Everybodyfields.

“Goodbye Midnight” is as singable a song as these ears have heard all year, with a push-pull created by the alternating male and female vocals that belies the not-so-joyous lyrical content. Elsewhere, the band touches on blues and folk forms in the pursuit of another tune as engaging, mostly succeeding in making this a brief but enjoyable end-of-summer musical trip.
