It’s enough to warm the heart of an old unrepentant punk rocker, seeing the members of FLAG ripping the Black Flag classic “My War” a new one. It’s appropriate, since most of them were in Black Flag at one point or another. The members of FLAG are:
Keith Morris – vocals
Chuck Dukowski – bass
Bill Stevenson – drums
Dez Cadena – guitar, vocals
Stephen Egerton – guitar

Egerton is the odd punk out, as he was in the Descendents/All, but hey, that’s good enough for me.
Henry Rollins fans may feel that the Rollins-led era defined Black Flag, but the other members are showing here that they can still bring the noise themselves. Oh, and did I mention that this clip was recorded at the California venue where Black Flag played their first ever show, in 1979?

Still on a musical high from this past weekend at MerleFest; so the final video in this month’s daily series is a tribute song to Doc Watson from Peter Rowan. this clip comes from the pre-MerleFest edition of the online music show Music City Roots, which aired the day before this year’s festival. I did get to hear Rowan sing this one in person during the weekend, and it was just as good if not more so given that it was on the Watson stage.

Merlefest 2013 is done, and it was a wonderful weekend of great music–so good in fact that I shot little to no video while I was there. The SC Broadcasters were so much fun, however, that I had to get a couple songs of theirs filmed, including this energetic gospel tune.

one of the most anticipated sets of the weekend for me comes at the very close of Merlefest–the Avett Brothers. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the guys play, and never at Merlefest before. Today’s video clip is from Merlefest 2006, an impromptu performance somewhere on the festival grounds with no mikes, no nothing…truly unplugged. It’s this kind of magic moment that keeps people coming back year after year after year…here’s to another great year of Merlefest.
